Saint Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia. Saint Petersburg is located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. It is often called just Petersburg. The short spelling is St. Petersburg.

Saint Petersburg is home to many museums, many of them hosted in historic and beautiful buildings. The largest of the museums is the Hermitage Museum, featuring interiors of the former imperial residence and a huge collection of art.

Saint Petersburg offers many parks and gardens, some of the most famous of which are situated in the southern suburbs, including one of the largest English gardens of Europe in Pavlovsk.

Among Saint Petersburg's more than fifty theaters is the world-famous Mariinsky Theater (also known as the Kirov Theater), home to the Mariinsky Ballet company and opera.
